Killarney Area Description
Killarney Town (from the Irish: Cill Airne meaning "church of sloes") is situated at the base of Ireland's highest mountain range and is the gateway to the Killarney Valley and Killarney National Park. Killarney National Park covers approximately 10,000 hectares/26,000 acres of mountain, valley, parkland, woodland/forest and lakes.
The town is located north of the MacGillicuddy Reeks, on the northeastern shore of the Lough Lein/Leane which are part of Killarney National Park. The town and its surrounding region is home to St. Mary's Cathedral, Ross Castle, Muckross Abbey, Torc Waterfall and Gap of Dunloe. Because of it's stunning beauty, history and central location on the famed Ring of Kerry is a popular tourist destination and has been for centuries.
Killarney won the Best Kept Town award in 2007, in a cross-border competition jointly organised by the Department of the Environment and the Northern Ireland Amenity Council. In 2011, it was named Ireland's tidiest town and the cleanest town in the country by Irish Business Against Litter
